We made it to Amarillo Texas yesterday to the Oasis RV Park.
Close to the border of Texas from NM we stopped at Russells Truck Center located on historic Route 66. Their retro Americana museum inside was awesome.
Some of you who know me know that I have a 1970’s Rowe jukebox bought on an ebay auction many years ago. The jukebox was bought by the seller at a VFW in Ohio and refurbished by the young man who drove it all the way from Ohio to our home in Stowe Vermont at that time. When the man dropped off the jukebox he said he was going to sleep in his car before he headed back to Ohio the next morning. Of course in good conscience we could not let him do that and invited him to sleep inside the house but of course in the lower locked off section near a basement bathroom. Not knowing anything about his person we slept with one eye open surrounded by our six dogs. He was gone by early morning and several days later I shipped all the country and western records that came inside the jukebox back to him and replaced the jukebox with 60’s, 70’s and 80’s 7″ records.
Needless to say, I was in my glory at The Russells Museum since they had several jukeboxes on display.
This picture below is not my juke box, but it is identical except for the color.
Russells Museum also had the old transistor radios.
Growing up in Canada, we did not get the same great music as the US so late at night I used to get a great signal from NYC on my transistor radio. They played a lot of great R&B music all night long. Even though it is a big city, it seemed that the Montreal channels stopped broadcasting by 10pm but New York just never went to sleep.
I always wondered why I could get such a good signal at night and here is the reason as I just learned. Certain radio stations, especially the short-wave and AM bands, can travel far. Short-wave can circle the globe, and AM stations transmit hundreds of miles at night. This extended transmission is possible is because of the ionosphere, one of the layers of the atmosphere. It is called the ionosphere because when the suns rays hit this layer, many of the atoms there lose electrons and turn into ions.
Famous old people from way back
The only kind of motorcycle that I can drive
The museum also has a lot of very cool cars.
And there were motorcycles too
There is not much to do in Amarillo today. The winds are strong, the rain is coming, museums are closed on Mondays and the RV Museum that I wanted to see is closed until June because they are moving to a new location but we will stay here until tomorrow because of a stuck slide issue. At least this isn’t us.
At the Oasis RV Park where we are staying
Tomorrow, Oklahoma.
