Who has not seen and enjoyed the movie The Sound Of Music?
In the early 1940s, the von Trapp family toured the United States as the Trapp Family Singers before eventually settling in Stowe, Vermont on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. In the summer of 1950, they began welcoming guests to a rustic, 27-room family home/lodge. After a devastating fire in 1980, the original structure was replaced by the new Trapp Family Lodge, a striking, 96-room alpine lodge situated on 2,500 acres offering magnificent indoor and outdoor resort amenities. The entire property is owned and operated by the von Trapp family.
Last night was a beautiful night as we watched the Vermont Symphony Orchestra play beautiful music outside on the Trapps grounds.
Music in the Meadow: Vermont Symphony Orchestra 2019 Summer Festival Tour
“Strike Up the Orchestra!” was crafted by guest conductor Sharon Lavery, making her VSO debut. The orchestra showcases the composers who set America to music: Gershwin, Joplin, Bernstein, Copland, and the foremost film composer of our generation, John Williams. The concert closed with a dazzling fireworks display accompanying Tchaikovsky’s famous 1812 Overture and the beloved marches of John Philip Sousa.
The sun was warm & beating strong and we all wore sunglasses and hats but by the time the sun went down it was time to pull the jackets and blankets out.
Music In The Meadow has been a long standing tradition in Stowe and attracts many residents and visitors. Produced by Stowe Performing Arts, the first concerts were held in Whisker’s Field on Mountain Road in 1976 and, at the suggestion of Johannes von Trapp, the concerts were moved to the meadow at Trapp Family Lodge in the early 1980s, where they’ve continued every summer since. It is a great place for family and friends to get together with a picnic meal, watch the sunset at the mountain and enjoy some beautiful music.
